I invited a friend to come hang out this weekend. While having a couple drinks at the local casino – and the patio looks out at the Stawamus Chief.
A few facts about the Stawamus Chief:
It is the 2nd largest chunk of granite in the world
It is approximatley 2300 feet above Howe Sound.
You can hike the back trails or climb the front face. Either way – its a nice long way to the top. There are 3 peaks – and it’s mostly stairs to all three of them. There are also ladders, chain ropes and rocks to climb up.
It’s not an *easy* hike. It’s a fairly intense workout. For your average person, never mind me.
So my friend says – Why is there a telescope on the patio? I tell her its so that people can watch the climbers go up the front – but there’s also an option to go up the back and we could hike that in the morning if she wanted to. I’d prefer to go early – 8 or 9am because it gets too busy after that.
She said it sounded like fun.
We continued drinking. We went back to my house, chatted and continued drinking. We went to bed around 2am… chatted for a bit more.
And then … we get up at 9am. We’re hanging out, chattering, having coffee… and at 10 she says “Let’s go climb a mountain!”
So we did.
We hiked the Chief. All 2300 (ish) feet of it. It took us a long time. Not because of her – but because of me. That was the first exercise I’d done in at least 2 weeks. But we did it.
3/4 of the way up I had an emotional meltdown – but that’s to be expected.
But we made it:
On the way down – I was never so happy to see stairs as I was then… because the stairs are the end of the hike (or beginning depending on which way you’re going) but for us, it was the end… there was just a short walk and we’re back to the van.
It was a truly enjoyable day. I had a couple epiphanies about myself which I’ll share in a later post… but they were pretty important.
I’m looking forward to spending more time with Sarah… she’s a lot of fun… too bad she lives across the water on the Island… *sigh*
But those stairs… I was sooooo happy to see them… :p
